The sixteen to seventeen hundreds were certainly a dangerous time to be out at sea, with enterprising criminals often taking advantage of vulnerable boats in transit and thus began Piracy as we all know it today.

While pirates of old are commonly romanticized and surrounded in myth and legend about mounds of gold and secret Island’s full of treasure, in reality pirates usually didn’t take much home during their often short and perilous careers.

With International talk like a pirate day fast approaching (Sept 19th) we thought it would be a bit of fun to look back at who exactly the greatest pirate of all time was, at least in terms of the fortune they plundered through the years.

Customs officials are the front line in preventing prohibited items from entering the country. They quiz passengers at air and sea ports, and search freight shipments for concealed goods.

Most countries share a standard list of banned items, such as guns and explosives. However, some nations are stricter than others, and there are some very unusual regulations around the world. For example, Saint Lucia bans the import of Japanese shaving brushes, thanks to an anthrax contamination scandal in the early 1900s.

From communist contraband to banned books, here are some of the most unusual customs regulations from around the world.

The ocean covers almost three quarters of the Earth’s surface, and is around 14,000 feet deep on average. This vast body of water is largely unexplored, and strange objects often wash up on beaches all around the world.

Some of these are mysterious creatures from the depths of the ocean, never before seen by human eyes. However, other items are more familiar. Trainers, bananas, cigarettes, and even pieces of Lego have washed ashore in recent years.

The team at Logistics Consult have put together an infographic detailing some of the most bizarre finds.

The UK currently boasts one of the world’s most rigorous driving exams – the DVSA is constantly updating the syllabus, with satnavs and new reverse manoeuvres set to join the curriculum.

Some other nations also set the bar high – trainees in Denmark must undertake compulsory skid pan training, and the Spanish Highway Code is three times the length of the UK version. However, the same cannot be said for all countries. Until recently, licences could be bought without a test in Mexico City, and Turkish exams sometimes last less than two minutes.

The team at Logistics Consult have put together an infographic of driving exam facts from around the world, from the strangest regulations to the easiest tests.
